Barceló Bávaro Grand – Punta Cana Paradise

We’ve just returned from the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort — a place where the beaches look photoshopped, the pools go on forever, and the kids somehow discovered new levels of energy we didn’t know existed. If you’re thinking about heading to Punta Cana with little ones (or big ones) in tow, here’s everything we loved, everything we learned, and the moments we’ll be laughing about for years.

📍 Location

  • Set on Bávaro Beach, one of the most famous stretches of sand in the Dominican Republic — soft white sand, turquoise water, and the kind of views that make you consider never going home.

  • Around 8–9 hours from major UK airports — long enough for multiple snack rounds, movie marathons, and at least one “How much longer?” meltdown

20–25 minute transfer from Punta Cana Airport — quick enough that the kids didn’t even have time to start arguing about who sleeps where! The kids were instantly impressed by the tropical‑looking airport, complete with a thatched roof that made them feel like they’d stepped straight into a holiday brochure. Before we’d even collected our bags, they’d declared it “the coolest airport ever,” which set the tone perfectly for the week ahead.

We pre‑booked LSA Transport, and honestly, that was a great decision. A lovely driver was waiting for us the moment we stepped outside, holding a sign and smiling like he’d been expecting us all day. The kids were thrilled to climb into a big, air‑conditioned people carrier, and we were thrilled that nobody had to argue about who was sitting where. Smooth, cool, comfortable — exactly what you want after a long flight.

We visited in October — still within the official rainy season, but you’d hardly know it. The kids treated every passing thunderstorm like a full‑scale adventure, and we took the very sensible approach of hiding out in the closest bar until the skies calmed down again.

🛏️ Rooms

There’s no shortage of room options here — everything from superior suites for three, to family duplexes, all the way up to a presidential suite that sleeps eight (ideal if you’re travelling with half your extended family or just really like space).

We chose the Premium Level Family Junior Suite, which gave us two separate adjoining rooms and a shared bathroom: one for the grown‑ups, one for the kids, both with their own seating areas. We even lucked out with a gorgeous sea view. Premium Level gave us free Pirate Island access and a butler who magically secured dinner reservations — even the “oops, we forgot to book” ones. After hearing how tricky it was for other guests, we realised this perk was worth its weight in gold.

The boys were thrilled to discover a hot tub on our huge balcony… for about 24 hours. After that, the novelty disappeared faster than a poolside snack — probably because they were already spending 90% of their waking hours in the actual pool. Honestly, the hot tub is far better suited to a romantic couple who have the time (and energy) to enjoy it.

💦 Swimming Pools

Main Pool – The Social Butterfly

This is the social hub of the resort — lively when it wants to be, and chilled the rest of the time. Expect the occasional burst of music, a game or two, and the odd round of aqua aerobics to keep things interesting. If you’re after total silence, this still isn’t your pool. But if you like a bit of fun sprinkled between your sunbathing, you’ll feel right at home.

Adjoined to it was a much livelier pool — the kind clearly designed for adults who came for DJs, cocktails, and questionable dance moves. It didn’t look kid‑friendly… unless your child’s hobby is raving and pool-side posing.

Barcy Water Park -

For the younger crew, Barcy Water Park is basically toddler paradise: mini castles, gentle slides, splash zones, and waterfalls all tucked safely inside the pool. Everything is supervised by entertainers and lifeguards, so parents can relax while the kids live their best aquatic‑kingdom lives. And the best part — it’s free for all guests.

The mexican restaurant at Barcelo Bavaro Grand, Punta Cana

Pirates Island is the resort’s full‑blown pirate‑themed water park — complete with a wave pool, slides, and enough swashbuckling energy to thrill the bravest little adventurers. Premium Level guests get in for free, and you’ll need to be at least 1.20m (4ft) to tackle the slides… which sadly ruled out one of our children and, emotionally, my husband.

Adults‑Only Pool – The Forbidden Land

We walked past it longingly. It looked calm. Peaceful. Quiet. A place where people read books and drink cocktails without being splashed. One day, maybe.

🍽️ Food & Drink

You will not go hungry here. The Barceló Bávaro Grand has a massive buffet plus a long list of à la cartes included in the All Inclusive.

Buffet Restaurants - Huge variety, fresh options, and enough stations to keep everyone happy. The kids lived their best lives at the pasta and dessert stations.

À la Cartes (Included) -

Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Steakhouse, Seafood, Spanish, French — basically a world tour without leaving the resort. The French restaurant stole our hearts… unfortunately we only tried it right at the end of the trip, which meant no chance for a round two. Tragic, really. The steak house didn’t quite hit the mark for us. The service took its time, and the steak itself wasn’t exactly a show‑stopper.

There aren’t any grab‑and‑go snack bars here for a quick lunchtime bite, so we found ourselves drifting to the Sports Bar — a casual buffet setup with burgers, nachos, hot dogs and all the beige‑food classics kids adore.

Top Tips - wander over to The 19th Hole, the resort’s best‑kept secret. Honestly, no one seems to know it exists, which is probably why it’s so peaceful. It has a lovely little lunch menu, gorgeous views, friendly staff and décor that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into a hidden adults‑only oasis… even though the kids are absolutely still with you

Dress Code: Officially “long trousers for men,” but realistically, mostmen wore smart shorts (my husband included!)

🧸 Kids Club

The Barcy Club is already a mini wonderland — video games, ball pools, movies, a playground and a full activity schedule — but the fun doesn’t stop inside the building. The staff regularly whisk the kids off on little adventures: trips to the Barcy Water Park, rounds of mini golf, and even wholesome outings like feeding the ducks (a highlight for my oldest, who took it very seriously).

They also get surprise visits from the evening entertainers. One day the circus act popped in which went down a treat!

Teens Club - We don’t have teens, but the Xone nightclub — which is especially for them — looked very popular. Judging by the herds of teenagers stampeding in every evening, it’s clearly the place to be.

🎭Evening Entertainment

Every evening there’s a themed children’s show at the Gran Teatro Bávaro, and the little ones absolutely love it. For parents, it’s sweet… and after a few nights, just a tiny bit repetitive. But the kids were thrilled every single time, so we happily clapped along like loyal groupies.

The late show kicks off at 10pm, which sounded achievable… until we actually tried it. Once the kids beat the jet lag, they were so exhausted from swimming, exploring and generally living their best holiday lives that staying out for it was a challenge. Still, every time we passed by, the show looked brilliant — we just couldn’t keep our eyes open long enough to watch it properly.

We also became big fans of the resort train, which was absolutely essential given the sheer size of the place. Without it, we’d still be wandering around looking for the lobby.

🌊 Beach & Watersports

Bávaro Beach is stunning — soft sand, warm water, gentle waves, and palm trees that look like they were placed there by a stylist. We travelled mid-October which meant we caught the tail end of sargassum season. Some days it showed up, most days it didn’t — and it never once stopped a good beach play or a dip in the sea.

You can try:

  • Kayaks

  • Pedalos

  • Snorkelling

  • Paddle-boarding

  • Catamarans.

The water is calm enough for kids, and the beach is huge enough that you’ll always find a spot.

We loved that all the non‑motorised water sports were included — nothing beats the kids announcing they want to try paddleboarding right now and not having to mentally calculate the cost.

Family on a day trip during their stay in Punta Cana

⭐ Our Rating: 7/10

Pros:

  • One of the best beaches we’ve ever seen

  • Huge variety of food

  • Endless activities for kids and teens

  • Spacious rooms perfect for families

  • Pools for every mood

Cons:

  • The resort is massive — expect lots of walking

  • Evening entertainment can get busy

  • Booking à la cartes requires planning

  • Some staff weren’t as friendly as we’ve experienced elsewhere — not everyone, but enough to notice.

The big question — would we return? It’s a tricky one this time, but yes, we would. We can really see this resort coming into its own for us when the boys are a bit older and can explore more independently. It has all the ingredients for a brilliant family holiday; we just think we’ll get even more out of it when our crew isn’t quite so little.
